2005
SUFFOLK ZONE AWARD
“This award is given to two outstanding scholar/athletes
(one girl and one boy) in each graduating class.”

Reid Groth, Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education
for the Riverhead Central School District has announced the
names of the 2005 recipients of the prestigious New York State
Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and
Dance – Suffolk Zone Award.
This
year’s recipients, who have demonstrated exceptional
physical fitness, scholastic ability and outstanding leadership
throughout their high school careers, are Ashley Lewis and
Jon Williams, both seniors at Riverhead High School. The
winners will be honored at an awards dinner in December.

Ashley
maintains a GPA of 99 in Physical Education, and has an overall
GPA of 93. She is All-League Varsity Soccer and All-County
in Varsity Winter and Spring Track, and she is also a captain
on all 3 teams. She is a member of the National Foreign Language
Honor Society and the Athletic Leaders Club. Ashley has volunteered
in various church and community events.
Ashley is still in the process of deciding on a college, but
her top choices are the University of Pennsylvania, University
of Buffalo, and Albany State University. Ashley plans to study
pre-medicine or sports medicine.
"My most significant experience in Physical Education
in High School," she shared "was running the mile
for the Presidential Fitness
test. This was a challenge for me and it gave me the chance
to push myself. I was very proud to receive the top honor."
Jon Williams
The male recipient of this year’s Suffolk Zone award
is Jon Williams. Jon carries a 96.9 G.P.A. and is a four year
participant in Wrestling and Football. He is also very active
in the PAL program as a physical education mentor/coach, as
well as a member of the Leaders Club, Honor Society, Jazz
Band, and Council for Unity.
Jon shares that his most significant experience in Physical
Education was the discovery of his love of teaching others.
Because of this discovery he plans to to
attend SUNY-Cortland or Oneonta next fall and major in history/education.
