Kindergarteners
Celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day
Catherine
Kent's and Kathleen Horn's kindergarten classes at the Roanoke
Avenue School have been reading about Johnny Appleseed's life.
Their classes celebrated "Johnny Appleseed Day"
together by tasting apples, graphing responses, reading stories,
playing games, making homemade applesauce and observing the
scientific changes to the apples.

Latinists attended the New
York State Junior Classical League
Convention for
Latin students and take home the Trophy--#1 and #8 on Academic
Test!
All of the students at the event (grades
7-12) took an exam that covered nine academic areas including:
grammar, derivation, mythology, vocabulary, geography, etc.
Two of the Riverhead Middle School Latinists recently learned
that they placed FIRST and EIGHTH in the overall academic
competition!

Rotary
Donates School Supplies to Phillips
In August, Dr. Marilyn
McLaughlin, acting on behalf of the Riverhead Rotary Club,
contacted Madlyn Davis at the Phillips Avenue School. She
explained to Ms. Davis, a secretary at the Phillips Avenue
School, that the Rotary was interested in "adopting"
a school and wanted to provide all the school supplies necessary
for as many students as they could. (9/04)

Ave. Principal Dr. Denise Lowe
has accepted a position as an Assistant
Superintendent of Curriculum and Education in the Central
Islip School District. (Former Pulaski Street Principal Charles
Venezia, now retired, has agreed to act as the Interim Principal
at Phillips.) Good Luck, Dr. Lowe! We wish you "all the
best" in your new position.

Heroes:
Garfield Langhorn and 9-11 Memorial Quilt
"September 10th was Garfield Langhorn's birthday. Garfield
Langhorn is a hero," read the "fabulous, fantastic"
first grade students in Keri Stromski's class at the Roanoke
Avenue School. "He was in the Army and he gave his life
for his friends," these little students read from the
tiny books they had made about Garfield Langhorn's life for
Garfield Langhorn Day. (9/04)

Come the Buses!
This
year the drivers, monitors and attendants had their refresher
on August 24, 2004. Paulette Zurawski received an award for
30 years of accident-free "Safe Driving" .
Wayne
Ehlers this past school year took 3rd place in the Suffolk
County School Bus Safety Road-eo and tied for 7th in the state
competition in Albany this past July. (August, 2004)

Principal at Roanoke
Debra
Rodgers has been chosen as the new principal at the Roanoke
Avenue School. (Dot Trondle retired after serving as principal
at the school for 14 years.) Her motto: "Shoot
for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars."

in Aid Allocations to RCSD from the State

in district aid that each of the area schools received as
a result of the recent approval of school aid by the NY State

Second Annual Teeny Awards
Winners
Announced
at Gala Awards Ceremony at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts
Ceremony -
The Teeny Awards is a student theatre arts recognition program
of the East End Arts Council and Westhampton Beach Performing
Arts Center patterned after the Tony Awards. Volunteer judges
attend high school plays and select three nominees in each
of a variety of categories, culminating in a gala awards ceremony
in June. (June 6, 2004)
