An Update on Administrative Personnel
Superintendent
Paul Doyle

Superintendent Paul R. Doyle began his tenure at RCSD on
November 29th and is hard at work rebuilding an administrative
team.
Mr. Doyle began his career in education as a social studies
teacher in the Syracuse City School District. He quickly became
the House Chairperson of the junior high in which he worked
and then the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent. He
has been a superintendent in four other New York districts:
Rome, Fairport, Saranac Lake, and most recently the Clyde-Savannah
School District in Clyde, NY.
Mr. Doyle is married and has three grown children and is now
centrally located between his daughter in East Hampton and
his son in Manhattan. His other son is a medical student at
the University of Rochester Medical School.
“I am looking forward to working with the board of education,
the community and the administrators, faculty, and staff in
this district. Working together we can help our students realize
their potential in one of the best school districts in the
state of New York.”
Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction
Ms. Nancy Carney, currently the Principal at the Springs Union
Free School in East Hampton, NY, has been appointed to fill
the position of Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and
Instruction for the Riverhead School District. Ms. Carney
will assume her duties on January 3, 2005.
Ms. Carney received her BA in Elementary Education and graduated
from Long Island University-Southampton. She received her
MS in Educational Technology from LIU-C.W. Post and her SDA
Certification from SUNY Stony Brook. She began her teaching
career as a 5th and 6th grade teacher at the Hampton Day School
and was also the technology and division coordinator. She
later became a 7th and 8th grade technology teacher at the
Springs Union Free School in East Hampton and most recently
was the principal at this K-8 school.
Ms. Carney initiated and facilitated a school-wide curriculum
mapping project at Springs, developed a School Portfolio Team,
and has been working with teachers on a new Reading and Writing
Initiative. One of her special areas of expertise is in integrating
technology into teaching and learning. She is also researching
strategies and techniques for classroom management and instructional
practice that decrease the likelihood of discipline problems.
We welcome Ms. Carney to the Riverhead School District.
Assistant Principal for RHS
Ms. Shirley Cepero joins the administrative staff at the high
school as an Assistant Principal. Ms. Cepero comes to the
district from the Freeport School District, where she was
an ESL teacher. (Ms. Cepero was also a summer school principal
for 2 years at Freeport). She is bilingual in Spanish and
received her BA from SUNY-Albany, her MA from Columbia University
and is currently a doctoral candidate in Ed. Admin. at Hofstra
University. Ms. Cepero grew up in Baldwin, NY, is a certified
diver and has two horses.
Her educational interests include mentoring new teachers,
differentiated instruction and creative approaches for diverse
learning styles.
“I enjoyed the diversity of the student body at Freeport,
and now I am very happy to be in Riverhead--another richly
diverse community,” shares Ms. Cepero.
Ms. Cepero joins RHS Assistant Principals Stanley Pellech
and Barry Tacktill, who were hired at the beginning of the
school year.
