National Merit Scholars

Two RHS students have been named as Semifinalists in the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Competition: Russell Kratoville and George Schlipp.

As Semifinalists, these two students are eligible to become Finalists and winners of one of these prestigious scholarships.

Both Russell and George are seniors and beginning their preparations for college.
Russell’s career plans include pursuing a degree in engineering with an expertise in aerospace design. Russell is a member of Mentathletes, Stage Band and captain of both the Varsity Golf and Varsity Tennis teams. He is also a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and an active volunteer in the community.

George is interested in astronomy, history and literature and hopes to pursue either science or astronomy as a career. He is active in Boy Scouts, Mentahtletes and the Outdoor Club.

Riverhead also had three Commended Students in the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Program. Robin Ahrens, Megan Ferris and Michael Staib recently received a certificate of merit from RHS Principal John Merone for their achievement. Although they will not continue in the 2003 competition for Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the 2003 competition by taking the 2001 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
