Riverhead
Middle School Principal Andrea Pekar in her address to the
parents at the beginning of the open house told the parents
as they gathered in the gymnasium,"I just kept waiting
for the rest of the students to arrive. The hallways were
so quiet and orderly. About 8:30 AM, I realized there weren't
any more students coming. It's quite a change!" |

|
| The
school population at the middle school this year, which
is now only grades 7 and 8 rather than 6 to 8, is approximately
725 students with 63 teachers. Eight of the teachers on
this year's middle school faculty are new to the district.
The middle school also has a new assistant principal Theodore
Fulton. Mr. Fulton comes to the district from West Babylon
Jr. High School where he was an administrative assistant
coordinating 8th grade discipline. |

New
to the Middle School staff this year is Ann Priapi. Mrs.
Priapi comes to teaching after another career as a biological
laboratory technician on Plum Island.
"Ask
me anything about African Swine Fever," jokes Mrs.
Priapi.

| Mrs.
Priapi explained to the parents who visited her class at open
house that she started in the district as a teacher's assistant
at the Phillips Avenue School and then taught science at the
district's Alternative School. This year, she is teaching
science at the Riverhead Middle School. "I
think it's wonderful that we have a mix of second career
teachers in the schools," shares Connie Gevinski, the
district's School to Work Coordinator who also had another
career before coming to teaching. "They bring a unique
overview of how education is applied in the real world to
the process of educating students." |
