Announcements AP SCHOLARS
RIVERHEAD STUDENTS ARE TAKING MORE AP EXAMS EACH YEAR and there are MORE students reaching a higher level of distinction on their exams each year.
"We are very proud of the growth that our students have shown in both taking and exceling on AP exams," states RCSD Superintendent of Schools Nancy Carney. "We applaud our faculty, administrators, and parents for encouraging students to take these rigorous courses that will better prepare our graduates for college. From 2009-2012 we increased the number of AP exams administered, and we have more students achieving excellence. I congratulate our students and our teachers."
Below you will find information regarding 2012 AP Scholars, as well as comparative data from the last three years. You will see that, over the past three years, the total number of AP Scholars has increased from 33 students to 65 students. This is an incredible accomplishment for these students and our faculty and staff.
The distinction of AP Scholar is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. An AP Scholar with Honor is a student that has received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. An AP Scholar with Distinction is a student who has received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Finally, a National AP Scholar is a student that has received an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. PLEASE NOTE THAT NATIONAL AP SCHOLARS ARE INCLUDED IN THE TOTAL COUNT AS PART OF THE AP SCHOLARS WITH DISTINCTION. Daniel Raynor was the first RHS student to achieve the title of National AP Scholar as a junior!
.
"If you see any of these students throughout the next couple of days, please take the time to congratulate them. WE ARE SO VERY PROUD OF THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS!" states Assistant Principal Charles Regan.

From a study in EDUCATION NEWS: The data also show that kids with the highest test scores are the most active in afterschool activities. Two-thirds of kids in the top quarter of test takers played sports, for example, compared to less than half in the lowest quarter.
This study has calculated that the odds of attending college were 97 percent higher for youngsters who took part in school-sponsored activities for two years than for those who didn't do any school activities. Three times as many had a GPA of 3.0 or higher; twice as many scored in the top quarter on math and reading tests. And 68 percent expected to get a college degree, compared to 48 percent of kids who weren't.

DANIEL RAYNORCITATION FROM DAN LOSQUARDO (Nov. 27, 2012) DANIEL RAYNOR was given a CITATION for academic achievement by Assemblyman Dan Losquardo at the November 27th Board of Education meeting. Daniel was named a National AP Scholar, the highest designation in the AP Scholar program--as a JUNIOR! This was a first in the HISTORY of the academic annals of RHS.
CAPTAIN OF LI CHALLENGE TEAM (November 14, 2012) DANIEL IS THE CAPTAIN of the RHS LI CHALLENGE Team that was victorious in its first round of play against a team from Brentwood HS. The RHS Team's Challenge will be aired on television on December 17th.
ACADEMIC DISTINCTION (October 2012) DAN RAYNOR recently received the highest designation possible in the AP Scholar Program as a NATIONAL AP SCHOLAR, which means that he received an average score of at least a 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on EIGHT or MORE of these exams. Dan is the first Riverhead High School student to achieve the title of National AP Scholar as a junior! He has received 8 fives out of a possible 10 on AP exams taken so far. This year Dan is taking AP Chemistry, AP English Literature and AP US Government and Politicss for a total of 13 AP courses!
COMMENDED STUDENT In addition Dan was named a COMMENDED STUDENT in the National Merit Scholarship Program. This honor indicates that he was among the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Quallfying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
DAN IS . . . Dan is a scholar (AP National Scholar / Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program / Mentathlete / a member of the Math Club / was on the Protein Challenge Team / The CSI Challenge team / The (LI) Challenge Team (the team will compete on TV in November) / he is in the Foreign Language Honor Society / the National Honor Society / he has received subject awards in 8 different course categories - and now, as a senior, there are MORE awards to come),
a musician (chamber choir and baritone horn in band / NYSCAME / North Fork Music Festival / HMEA),
an artist (photographer / interned with photographer Steve Berger),

Dan's major interests academically are in math and physics. His father attempted to keep him busy as a preschooler by handing him a math workbook. Good thinking!
Dan shares, "Although my parents were relieved to know that they had successfully found a way for me to keep myself amused by giving me math workbooks, something much greater happened to me: I had discovered my enthusiasm for mathematics. My interest in math led to my even greater interest in science and its practical applications. My interest in math and science has led me to a decision to pursue the study of Physics in college."
CONGRATULATIONS, DAN!
