VALEDICTORIAN ALEXA WHITE will be attending the University of Maryland, Baltimore County
 
(June 27) Valedictorian Alexa White will be attending the Honors College at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

The Honors College at UMBC: The Honors College is a gathering of colleagues—students, faculty, and staff—who are engaged in a common learning experience. Many Honors courses involve a more in-depth treatment of materials covered in regular class sections; others resemble graduate seminars in their small size and intensity of scholarship and in the special character of the relationship created by working closely with faculty members and other students. SALUTATORIAN MEGHAN DAVIS will be attending Northeastern University in Boston, MA
 
(June 27) Salutatorian Meghan Davis will be attending Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Meghan is very excited about the co-op program at Northeastern, which will allow her several chances to travel.

Co-op (short for "cooperative education") makes a Northeastern education richer and more meaningful, providing students with experiences at home and abroad that help them develop the knowledge, awareness, perspective, and confidence to transform their lives.

The world's most innovative co-op program—now more than 100 years old—prepares students for the global challenges of the next century. Attending school for either four or five years, they gain up to 18 months of professional experience related to their major or career interest with any of more than 2,000 employers across the United States and in 50 countries around the world. Jeremy Warner will attend the University of Rochester and major in engineering 

(May 24) Jeremy Warner, will be attending the University of Rochester in the fall of 2011. He was accepted into the 5-year GEAR masters program for engineering.

Students can accelerate and complete their master’s degree in engineering and applied sciences in a 3-2 B.S./M.S. program. The GEAR program provides selected students with an assurance of admission into one of seven engineering master’s programs at the University of Rochester’s Edmund A. Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences: biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, or optics. GEAR students receive a 50 percent tuition award in their fifth year of study in the form of a teaching assistantship. To remain eligible, GEAR students are required to maintain a 3.3 GPA through the first seven semesters (3.5 for optics). Applicants for this program will have demonstrated strong aptitude for engineering throughout their high school academic and co-curricular activities. (from University website)

  Malyk Leonard will attend SUNY-Stony Brook and major in mechanical engineering 
     
(May 16) Malyk Leonard will attend SUNY-Stony Brook in the fall, with plans to major in mechanical engineering.
  


"We are very proud of Malyk,” notes STEP advisor Claire Yannacone. “He has worked very hard this year, and his hard work paid off.”


  
The Science and Technology Entry Partnership (STEP) program provides high quality Saturday enrichment courses led by college faculty. These courses include: communications, life skills, career awareness, leadership skills, computer applications, mathematics and biology, earth science, engineering, physics and robotics. Malyk is one of four RHS students and two RMS students who recently won ribbons at the STEP Science Fair held at SCCC's Ammerman campus.
 Malyk won second place in his division. The STEP progam has paid dividends in the life of RHS senior Malyk Leonard.

Justin Brown will attend Dowling College to major in Special Education

               
(May 16) Justin Brown is a standout student at Riverhead High School and in the community. He is a true role-model for RHS students. Justin is a new senior at Riverhead High School. He is a resident of the Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch, and has been a foster child since the age of 11. With everything that Justin has gone through, he has proven himself to be a true scholar/athlete. He is an advanced student in math and science, and a stellar athlete on the Boys Track, Baseball, Basketball, and Football teams. Justin has also proved that he is a true role-model and mentor at the Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch. Justin has decided to stay at the Ranch after graduation to help other boys through difficult times. Justin will attend Dowling College in the Fall with a major in special education.

Kathryn Hill Receives Presidential Grant from St. Joseph’s College

(March 24, 2011) Upon the recommendation of her guidance counselor, Kathryn Hill was recently recognized for her outstanding academic achievement by St. Joseph’s College.  At a special reception on March 16, 2011, Kathryn was awarded the prestigious St. Joseph’s Presidential Grant, which covers full tuition for four years of study. 

Kathryn, with her family and Mr. Gassar from the high school guidance departmentM attended the reception.  Kathryn plans on attending St. Joseph’s next fall and will be pursuing a degree in education with a concentration in mathematics. Video from St. Joseph's College

Corrine Matlack Fell in Love with Lehigh University

(March 31, 2011) Corrine Matlack, a senior at Riverhead High School, was recently accepted to Lehigh University.  Corrine first fell in love with Lehigh on a campus visit when she thought she was walking "on to the set of a Harry Potter movie with Ivy covered walls and castle like structures".  She was most impressed with the students' demeanor.  They were academically serious yet down to earth and friendly.  She plans on studying Astro-physics in their new state-of-the-art science center.  Being the first member of her family ever to attend college, Corrine describes the experience as "a dream come true".
