SENIORS START FIRMING UP THEIR COLLEGE AND CAREER PLANS

(May 7, 2012) The college or career plans of some of the graduating class of 2012 are not yet complete, but many of the seniors have made this important decision. The Riverhead High School Guidance office has been busy working closely with students and families with regard to each student’s college selection and application plans all year.
Each year Riverhead High School students apply to more schools and this year is no exception with an all time school record of 2000 applications processed. This year, in particular, was an incredibly successful one with Riverhead students gaining admission to the most prestigious schools in the nation.
For the first time ever, Riverhead High School students were accepted to 7 of the 8 Ivy League Colleges: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania. Our students were also accepted to every college in the SUNY system as well as many highly competitive private schools throughout the country including Boston College, Middlebury, Syracuse, MIT, Amherst, Brigham Young University, NYU, George Washington and Wesleyan. This success is the result of a four-year cooperative effort between guidance counselors, students, and parents.
Charles Gassar, the Director of Guidance, concludes proudly, “It truly is a banner year which will be hard to repeat. The guidance counselors had the good fortune of working with an incredibly talented group of seniors, who were able to distinguish themselves from other qualified applicants at these coveted institutions. We are proud of all of them as well as our school.”

Ms. Volcy writes about Kerrysha Pittman:
Kerrysha is a self-starter with incredible leadership qualities. From the time she entered RHS in ninth grade, she knew she wanted to attend college, but did not know where. It can be a daunting process for students and parents. Kerrysha decided to attend the Historical Black Colleges Tour this past October. For one week, she traveled south and visited over 15 colleges. She was able to experience college life first hand--living on the different campuses, eating in the cafeterias, and even sitting in on classes. She met many new people and earned acceptance to several schools while on the tour.
In the fall, Kerrysha will be attending Virginia State University, one of the schools she visited while on the tour. She says VSU had everything she was looking for in a college. This young lady is sure to achieve big things in college and beyond. >More
Ms. Salerno writes about Alycia Kratoville:
When Alycia first came to RHS in September 2008 she stated that she wanted to become an astronaut and attend the United States Naval Academy, where her brother attended a few years earlier. Over the next 3 ½ years, Alycia and I had many discussions about how she could challenge herself and stay active in school. She enrolled in the most challenging courses available at RHS, and worked outside of school at Brookhaven National Lab, Stony Brook University while participating in soccer, track and lacrosse. Alycia was offered four separate scholarships to play lacrosse at colleges, but still her desire to attend USNA continued. Just this April, Alycia’s dream came true. She was offered acceptance to NAPS (Naval Academy Prep School) and will be entering the USNA in the fall of 2013. When Amanda Gallo arrived at Riverhead High School as a ninth grader, she came down to my office in Guidance to introduce herself. Amanda was a quiet observer in the Guidance Office and, at times, she would come down with a friend to just listen to what some of the older students were asking. Amanda was always strong in math and science, but she wanted to experience and participate in as many classes as possible during her four year high school career. In addition to orchestra, ROTC, and a research class, Amanda took nine college level classes throughout her tenure at Riverhead. After her four year academic plan was designed and implemented, Amanda gained an understanding of all the college entrance examinations including the SAT Reasoning exam, the ACT, and SAT Subject exams. Outside of the classroom, she played soccer and became an active member of the Science Club, joined and performed in several Blue Masques’ productions, and became editor of the school newspaper.
Amanda applied to six colleges for engineering and got into all of them. She will be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and, in addition, she applied for and earned a four year NAVY ROTC Scholarship and will serve in the Navy as an officer after she completes her degree at RPI.
Amanda notes, “Guidance is a great place to bounce around ideas and strategies early on, and then execute those ideas when the time comes.” >More

Melodee Riley
Melodee Riley received a full athletic scholarship and will join the University of Connecticut's track team in the Fall of 2012.
Although Melodee is undecided about her college major at this point in time, she already has her sights set on the possibility of jumping at the 2016 Olympics. >More
Jalyn Brown
Jalyn Brown, a four-year All-League, three-year All Count, All Long Island and Top 50 in NYS basketball player, received a full athletic scholarship to play basketball at C.W. Post next year on a full athletic scholarship. Jalyn, who is a point guard on the RHS Varsity Girls Basketball team, was brought on to the varsity team when she was an eighth grader. Although, she is only about 5'4" tall, Jalyn doesn't see her height as a disadvantage.
"I like a fast-paced game. That's how we play in Riverhead and that's the kind of game they play at C. W. Post. The coaching staff is great there and I loved the girls I met. I can really see myself there."
