(April 25, 2012 – Riverhead, NY) The awards season at Riverhead High School begins with the National Honor Society Breakfast to thank the graduating seniors and to welcome the new inductees into the Honor Society. The breakfast is also an organizational event where the students vote on next year's officers and their choice for "honorary inductee" (usually a faculty member).
The National Honor Society is more than just an honor roll. Using national guidelines, the local chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
“Forty-two students were inducted this year,” states National Honor Society co-advisor Renee Pastor. ""They're great kids, and they pitch in and help in almost every aspect of the school and the community."
"The 2012 inductees truly represent a cross section of our student population," explains co-advisor Laural Olsen. "There are students who are outstanding in community service, music, dance, languages, art and athletics as well as academics. Ms. Pastor and I are really looking forward to working with this group next yaer. Next year should be a fun and productive year."
Last year's officers, Mariah Messina (President), Kristin Peragine (VP), John Rios (Secretary), and Annina Giannuzzi (Treasurer), helped co-advisors, Laural Olsen and Renee Pastor, organize the event. National Honor Society President Mariah Messina presented the opening remarks at the April 25th induction ceremony and lead theinductees in the Honor Society's pledge during the Candle Ceremony. The new officers for next year include: Alexandra McKillop (President), Jaclyn Griffith (VP), Kyle Trypuc (Secretary), and Amber Kempermann (Treasurer).
Mariah also presented an honorary National Honor Society member jersey to this year's honorary faculty recipient (girls basketball coach and English teacher David Spinella).
Mariah noted that, "Mr. Spinella is a great teacher as well as a great coach. He makes every player and every student feel special."
The dinner and induction ceremony was held at the Vineyard Caterers in Aquebogue. The following students met the above qualifications and were inducted into Riverhead High School's chapter of the National Honor Society in 2012:
