Victory is the stuff the best memory is made of
By Bob Liepa
RIVERHEAD—Coach Mike McKillop Memorial Field evokes plenty of memories for the Riverhead High School football team’s 13 seniors, yet the best of them all was produced on Sunday.
With the biggest victory of their lives, the Blue Waves earned a place for themselves in a Suffolk County final for the second time in six years. Their 48-14 rout of the North Babylon Bulldogs in a Division II semifinal saw to that. By winning for the 10th time in as many games, the undefeated Blue Waves nabbed a spot in the division final Saturday against the West Islip Lions (9-1) at Stony Brook University. >More

Having been ousted in the Suffolk County Division II football semifinals the past two years, the Blue Waves know full well that the regular season means next to nothing once the playoffs start. So, when the second season started on Saturday, the Blue Waves made certain they took the right steps, without any slip-ups.
Tim Velys threw for three touchdowns and Miguel Maysonet and Rasheen Moore scored three touchdowns apiece -- all in the first half -- as the Blue Waves easily cleared their first postseason hurdle. In firm control from the start, the Blue Waves registered 43 first-half points, played substitutes in the second half and blasted the West Babylon Eagles, 49-0, in a playoff qualifying game at Coach Mike McKillop Memorial Field. >More / Slideshow
