(October 17, 2008 - Riverhead, NY) Calvin Wesley, a tenth grade student at the STAR Academy at RHS, was named as the first STAR Academy Student of the Month.
Calvin's educational goals are to finish high school and go to college to major in business management. He says, "I want to be an entrepreneur, like Diddy. He is someone who's doing things." Calvin continues, "I am thankful to my grandmother, who supports me and encourages me to do the right thing." He smiles, proud of his accomplishment, "I would never have been Student of the Month at the high school, but at the STAR Academy, things are different. I'm glad I'm here."
To become STAR Academy student of the Month, Calvin had to demonstrate the following characteristics, which are required to achieve this recognition:
-
Work to his/her potential.

-
Set a good example all month.
-
Maintain no negative office visits for the month.

The Riverhead Elks Lodge #2044, who, working with the STAR Academy, is sponsoring the STAR Academy’s Student of the Month Program, rewarded Calvin’s effort. Theresa Hubbard, an Exalted Ruler at the Riverhead Elks Lodge, and Lisa Douglas, a Loyal Knight, presented Calvin with a framed Certificate of Achievement and a $25 Tanger Gift Card.
"This is an example of the many ways that the school district and the community can work together to help motivate and improve student achievement," states STAR Academy Teacher/Facilitator Michelle Gode. "We're very thankful to the Elks Lodge for helping us achieve this goal."
"The Riverhead Elks Lodge really wanted to be part of the positive effort that students from the STAR Academy displayed by taking part in the redesign of the program and by working so hard over the summer to renovate the portables at the high school," states Ms. Hubbard. "The Elks Lodge has a number of programs that reinforce positive student behavior. They sponsor scholarships, coordinate a Flag Day Essay Contest, promote hoop shoots and soccer shootouts and a number of other programs for children and the community."
