(November 2008, Riverhead, NY) Twenty-three RHS students participated in a field trip to the Suffolk County Community College’s (SCCC) Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center. The students were able to tour the building, visit classrooms and talk with Jim Fogarty, who, representing the college, led the tours. Suffolk County Community College is offering this field trip opportunity each Monday to all the high schools on Long Island.
Newly opened in January of this year, the Culinary Arts and Hospitality building at SCCC, (located at the corner of Roanoke Avenue and Main Street in downtown Riverhead) offers 2 year program degrees in (1) Culinary Arts/Restaurant Management, (2) Baking and Pastry Arts as well as (3) Hotel/Resort Management.
The students who attended the field trip were a mix of high school students presently enrolled in the Family and Consumer Science (FCS) elective titled “Basic Food Prep and Nutrition.” There are six sections of this elective in the FCS Department at RHS that are being taught this year by Mrs. Amy Doucette and Mrs. Janice Szczesny. Food Prep and Nutrition students learn the basic skills and techniques for food preparation. At the end of the tour, the students were given the opportunity to individually prepare (and eat) dessert crepes with fresh whipped cream and blueberries made with Mr. Fogarty’s guidance in the state-of-the-art subzero demonstration room at the Culinary Arts Center.
