Riverhead High School’s Homecoming Week had a happy ending as the Riverhead Blue Waves soundly defeated the West Islip Lions. Both teams entered the game with a 5-0 record. RHS running back/linebacker, Miguel Maysonet, a senior, played an amazing game and scored five touchdowns — four on runs, one on a pass from quarterback Tim Velys — and ran for 302 as the first-place Blue Waves beat the second-place West Islip Lions, 34-13, at Coach Mike McKillop Memorial Field.
“This was probably Miguel’s best game,” Blue Waves Coach Leif Shay said.
Maysonet has scored 18 touchdowns this season, 16 on runs, one on a reception, and one on an interception return. He has 1,346 rushing yards to his credit.
During halftime, the RHS NJROTC and the Varsity Blue Waves Cheerleaders treated the Homecoming audience to a patriotic half-time presentation.
In addition, there was a parade of floats and an announcement detailing the Spirit Week winners. Total scores revealed the overall Spirit Week winner to be the Seniors followed by the Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors. The float contest, which depicted “Hamlets of Riverhead,” was a tie for first place by the Freshmen and the Seniors, followed by the Sophomores in second and the Juniors in 3rd place.
