RHS VARSITY LACROSSE PLAYERS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS
TWO MORE RHS LAX PLAYERS WILL PLAY IN COLLEGE
(June 3, 2010 - RIVERHEAD, NY) Two young men from this year’s RHS Varsity lacrosse team, Travis Baskin and Brian Smith, have joined the ranks of the many young men from RHS who have graduated and won the opportunity to play lacrosse in college. As Travis noted, “Long Island has some of the best lacrosse players in the nation. Our team plays some of the best high school lacrosse teams on Long Island.”
Below is a description of these two seniors:
Midfielder: Travis Baskin, who played “midi” on the RHS varsity lacrosse team, is a team captain and a two-year starter. He had 10 goals and 4 assists this season. He also scooped up 21 ground balls. Travis, who also played football and wrestled, received an academic and athletic scholarship to play lacrosse for Mercy College in Dobbs, NY, where he plans to major in graphic design.
“Travis is a strong player, and I’m proud to see him do well in school and lacrosse,” stated his mother Stephanie Baskin.
Defenseman: Brian Smith is a two-year captain and a three-year starter. This season he had 2 assists along with 18 ground balls and 9 takeaways on defense. Brian has also received a scholarship to play at the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, MI. He received both an academic and athletic scholarship.
“He’s a good leader, a great lacrosse player, and I’m extremely proud of his hard work. I’m glad it paid off,” says his mom.
“I’m very proud of my players,” notes Varsity Lacrosse Coach Tony Lawrence. “These two guys are good people, good athletes, and they worked hard in school. I tell my players over and over, 'you can’t just be a good player. You also have to have good grades.' The two must go together if you’re going to get a scholarship to play in college."
