(October 19, 2012) Ten RHS students attended the 17th annual East End Youth Leadership Summit held October 19th at the Riverhead Campus of Suffolk County Community College. The students in attendance were from fourteen East End schools.
According to the Summit's program, "The Youth Leadership Summit brings together youth and community leaders from across the East End for a day of unity, education, and awareness through the exploration of issues affecting teen lives in our community."
Students attended four workshops:
- Aspects of Leadership - Presented by Debbie Slevin - Theatrical Coach, Director and Teacher;
- Dignity and Diversity - Creating Safer Schools - Presented by Matthew Cotty, Director of Youth Services, LIGALY - This wokshop addressed stereotypes, sexual orientation, homophobia, anti-GLBT bullying and ways for students to get involved in their school
- Coping With Consequences - Presented by Peter Hawkins, Wheelchair Athlete / Motivational Speaker, who discussed how his life is affected by drinking and driving, living with a disability and taking responsibility.
- Plenary / Student Voices - Presented by Kym Laube H.U.G.S. (Human Understanding and Growth Seminars), who helped student groups develop a public service announcement highlighting the lessons they learned at the Summit.
