Educator
of the Week/Month
(December
15, 2007) During the first week of December, RHS science teacher
Bob Jester was filmed as a Channel 55 "Teacher of the Week"
and photographed and celebrated as a Dowling College/News 12 "Teacher
of the Month."

Food Prep Class Shares its Goodies
(December
15, 2007) ) Who wouldn’t love getting a gift of homemade cookies,
pies, fudge or chocolate covered pretzels during the holidays? The
students in Mrs. Sczesny and Mrs. Doucette’s Food Prep and
Nutrition class at RHS are getting into the holiday spirit by donating
their baked goods to one of the many local charities in Riverhead
as part of a holiday baking project. Each of the eight classes has
five to six kitchen groups for a total of 160 students. Each group
chose a baking project and then chose a charity to help them distribute
their baked goods.

Riverhead Central School District takes special pride in the performance
of its teams and the many sportsmanship and scholar/athlete awards
the district has received.

Annual Pass-In-Review
(December
12, 2007) The RHS N.J.R.O.T.C. under the direction of its instructors
Lt. Col. Peter G. McCarthy and Chief Gunner’s Mate James R.
Finch and under the command of Commanding Officer Carissa Woerner
underwent its Annual Pass-In-Review and Inspection by N.J.R.O.T.C.
Area 4 Manager Retired U.S. Navy Commander Joseph W. Hankins.

Essay Contest
(December
4, 2007) RHS senior Rock Mabaka was recently recognized with a second
place/honorable mention for an essay he submitted in the 9-12 grade
category of the annual essay contest of the New York State Teachers
of English to Speakers of Other Languages Association. (There was
only one winner and one honorable mention in the statewide contest.)

Suffolk Zone Award Winners
(November
2007) CONGRATULATIONS to this year’s recipients of the prestigious
New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance – Suffolk Zone Award, Ashley Bell and John Andrejack,
both seniors at Riverhead High School. The winners will be honored
at a dinner at East Wind in Wading River on December 5, 2007.

Six
out of Nine at Latin Declamatio
(November
2007) At the FIFTH ANNUAL SUFFOLK COUNTY LATIN DECLAMATIO, a competition
in which students dramatically present from memory passages of Latin
literature, the Riverhead Latin Program again won the greatest share
of victory. Twelve schools from Suffolk and Nassau County participated;
three awards were presented in each of three divisions: Middle School,
High School Pre-Regents, High School Advanced. Of the nine total
awards, Riverhead Latinists captured six!

wins first round in
News 12 Long Island Challenge
(November
2007)
Thirty-two
Long Island high school teams—sixteen from each Suffolk
and Nassau Counties compete in the tenth anniversary season of
The Long Island Challenge, an educational quiz show designed to
test students’ knowledge of history, science, math and arts
and literature. The Long Island Challenge can be seen every Saturday
on News 12 LI at 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Encore presentations
of the show can be seen on News 12 LI every Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
and 9:30 p.m.
RHS’s first competition was against
East Islip and was aired on December 1 and 2 at 6:30 & 9:30
p.m. They WON their first round! To learn about each team member

Students
to Attend All-County Music Festival
(November 2007) The RHS students selected to attend the All-County
Music Festivals were recently announced. Three students have been
chosen to attend the NYSCAME All-County Music Festival: Peter Cybulski,
tenor in All-County Mixed Chorus; Magdalena Szalowski, soprano in
All-County Mixed Chorus; and Anna Flores, soprano in All- County
Women’s Chorus. Anna is also an Alternate to All-State.

Lead Workshop at YL Summit

(October 2007) Ten presenters on the Council for Unity program from
Riverhead High School shared the origin, history and personal impact
of the Council for Unity in Riverhead and responded to questions
from students who attended their workshop.

NJROTC Drill Team Competition
(October
2007) The Riverhead NJROTC Drill Team competed at the Bethel, CT
Invitational Drill Meet (10 high schools competed) this past Saturday,
Oct. 20th, and performed exceptionally well. More<
Kayla
Lewis chosen for Newsday's Way to Go Column
(October
2007) Kayla Lewis, a senior at Riverhead High School, represented
the United States as a global scholar this summer at the 2007 Global
Young Leaders Conference in Vienna, Budapest and Prague. She was
one of 407 students selected from more than 100 countries. More<

RHS Homecoming

(October 2007) The
Spirit Winners for the week were the Seniors. They showed the most
spirit at the Pep Rally, won the Hall Decorating Contest and tied
for 2nd in the Float Contest. This year's theme for the parade was
Disney Movies. The Junior Class won best float. The football team
won its game 55 to 13.

Council
for Unity's Hands Across the Water
(September 2007)
"One of our goals for our students this year was to introduce
them to people from different cultures. This was a perfect opportunity
to begin that process," stated Ms. Stokes.The seven young people
told the RHS students about their country and customs and answered
questions about their perceptions of the United States. More<

National Youth Leadership Forums
(September 2007) Four
RHS students attended National Youth Leadership Medical Forums at
colleges in the cities listed above. The NYLFs were ten days long
and introduced these young women to a possible career in the medical
field. They stayed on college campuses and had Medical Education
Discussions (MEDs) and on-site experiences at area hospitals.

Summer Apprenticeship Program

(September 2007) Allan,
who is 15 and a 10th grader this year at RHS, attended Brookhaven
National Laboratory’s Minority High School Summer Apprenticeship
Program. The objective of the program is to stimulate a broader
interest and awareness among minority students in science careers;
to reinforce their academic training in science, mathematics and
engineering; and to advise and assist them in seeking careers in
these fields. More<

Government and Homecoming

(September 2007) RHS’s
Student Government’s first BIG task will be to help organize
HOMECOMING 2007. Spirit week which follows Columbus Day will include
Class Color Day, 80s Day, Pajama Day and Spirit Day. Homecoming
Day is October 13. Before school began, Student Government members
helped lead tours through the building as part of the 9th grade
orientation.
