Seven
RHS Lacrosse Players to Play in College
(June
2007) Seven out of nine senior players on the Riverhead High School
Lacrosse team will be playing lacrosse in college next fall. More<
RHS Band Debuts Original Composition
(June
2007) The RHS Spring Concert featured a number of "musical
moments." In addition to chorus and orchestra performances
the band's world premiere performance of Scenes from the Peconic
commissioned by and dedicated expressly to the RHS Band by the well
known composer Carl Strommen was an exciting moment. More<

Zimbler will be the new RHS Principal
(May
2007) Mr. Zimbler earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1992 from SUNY-Oneonta
in Interdisciplinary Studies and English and received his Master
of Science in Educational Administration and Supervision in 1998
from C.W. Post. He began his administrative career at the Shell
Bank Intermediate School 14 in Brooklyn, NY as Assistant Principal
and the Departmental Chair of English and Social Studies. He then
took a position as an Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction
at Malverne High School and is currently the principal at the Howard
T. Herber Middle School in Malverne. More<

Valedictorian & Salutatorian
(May
2007) RHS senior
Tara McKenna is Valedictorian for the class of 2007. Her parents
are Martin and Janis McKenna.
Tara is the second valedictorian in the McKenna household. Her sister,
Erin, was also an RHS valedictorian. Tara maintains a 107.37 (weighted)
grade point average and is active in Math Club and Mentathletes.
She was a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship program
and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also is president
of the high school Latin team and the Latin Honor Society.

2007
National Foreign Language Honor Society
(May
2007) The National
Foreign Language Honor Societies held their induction ceremonies
at Riverhead High School on May 10, 2007. Thirty-five students were
inducted into the French Honor Society; fourteen students were inducted
into the Latin Honor Society; and forty-three students were inducted
into the Spanish Honor Society for a total of 92 students.

Emergency
Response Simulation Event
(May
2007) At 9:00
AM on Sunday, May 6th, the students and staff gathered to discuss
what would occur during the simulation. They were given this narrative:
"It's a sunny spring day on a Tuesday morning at approximately
11:30 AM. The wind is blowing slightly southwest. Two service technicians
are servicing the boiler. While the boiler is being worked on, it
back flashes and a fire develops in the boiler room. Heavy smoke
overtakes the rest of the school in a matter of minutes."

Participates in GREEN Project
(May
2007) The Riverhead
Central School District has a number of partnerships and programs
of a scientific nature that give students real life experiences.
A new partnership has been formed with Brookhaven National Lab’s
Office of Educational Programs. This partnership between BNL, the
Parks Department in the Town of Brookhaven and the schools is being
called the “Open Space Stewardship Program” (OSSP) or
the GREEN Institute (Gaining Research Experience in the ENvironment).
The high school Environmental Science class taught by Ms. Linda
Dowd is participating in the GREEN project.

President's
Volunteers Award Winners
(March
2007) RHS seniors Katrina Roehrig and Liam
Hayes have been honored for their exemplary volunteer service
with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.
The Award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered
significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and
their country, was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community
Awards program on behalf of the President’s Council on Service
and Civic Participation.

Timothy
Smith, Filmmaker
(February
2007) With the excitement from the Oscars still echoing through
the newspapers and the airwaves, Riverhead High School would like
to congratulate RHS student Timothy Smith, who has been selected
as a participant in the William H. Cosby Future Filmmakers Workshop
at NYU’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts. Beginning in
February, Tim will travel to New York City for 12 Saturday Workshops
from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM to learn the art of filmmaking.

RHS National and Presidential Fitness Award
Winners
(February
2007) RHS PE teachers, Ms. Braune and Ms. Winkel, invite the girls
in their physical education classes to set goals, to challenge themselves
physically and to reach for excellence. One of the programs they
use to help their students strengthen their bodies and their commitment
to physical achievement is the Presidential Fitness Challenge.
