Dear Students and Parents . . .
A Welcome to the New School Year Message
from RHS Principal John Merone

I trust you are experiencing a restful yet productive summer and are enthusiastically looking forward to the 2004-2005 school year.

Our intellect should tell us that the school team includes everyone from teachers to counselors to nurses to administrators and to, of course, parents. We are all on the same team with the same mission. We only have different functions. Our collective experience should tell us that we must all function as a team for two practical reasons. First, working together works. Second, we cannot do everything that needs to be done alone, but together any achievement is within the realm of possibility. The plain truth is that the more we can work as a team and as teammates, the more probable our individual and joint success will be with our students.

It continues to be my goal to try to provide our students with the proper support to excel. This past year many students strived to be the best that they could be. They have learned that in order to accomplish goals a person must overcome obstacles and work hard. They have learned to take personal pride in developing their own excellence. By using PRIDE, they have discovered the formula to overcome the normal problems leading to “academic excellence.”

The High School administration will work hard and closely with you, as a teammate, to help promote your child’s success.

The assistant principals are as follows:

          Mr. Barry Tacktill, Assistant Principal
Mr. Stanley Pelech II, Assistant Principal

TBA, Assistant Principal

Ms. Campbell will be the Director of the Alternative School.

Guidance Counselors have been working very hard to schedule all students into all required courses for graduation, as well as those courses that are of special interest to your child. Your child’s course selections are enclosed with this letter.

Students may request that their program be changed only if it will bring about an educational benefit for him or her. Students requesting a change because of a mechanical error on their schedule, a schedule conflict or because they have had the same teacher more than once for the same course can meet with their guidance counselor to remedy the situation. Requests must be submitted on or before October 1st.

Students requesting a change for any other reason will require administrative approval. In these cases, the reason for the change will have to be submitted by the student and his/her parent to the guidance counselor in writing before it can be considered. The following breakdown will be the counselors assigned student caseload:

         A - DAN Lorraine Sferlazza
         DAO - HOL Christopher Martin
         HOM – MI Craig Korobow
         MO - SA Suzanne Maurino
SC – Z Christy Van Hoesen

The following contains information regarding the opening of school in September.

1. A special ninth grade orientation will be held on September 2nd.

2. A special bell schedule including an extended homeroom will be in effect for opening day, Wednesday, September 8, 2004. (Regular bus schedule will be in effect).

3. Normal daily schedule will start on Thursday, September 9, 2004.

4. All BOCES classes will be in effect on Wednesday September 8, 2004.

5. A daily, before school breakfast program will begin on September 8, 2004 from 7:15 am – 7:30 am in the high school cafeteria. Food must be eaten in the cafeteria area only.

6. Parking permits will only be issued to students with senior licenses. All other students should use transportation provided by the district.

The High School’s basic academic mission remains “teaching and learning.” Your support is needed and greatly appreciated. Remember as a team we can succeed.

Students who find they are having academic problems in their courses are encouraged to seek extra help immediately.

As a school and community, the safety, security and welfare of our students is always our most important concern, therefore effective immediately all displays of gang related apparel including “all headgear” (all hats, do-rags, bandanas, headbands), the display of colors, the imprinting of shirts and the use of hand-signs which are determined to be gang or clique related will not be tolerated.

Furthermore, if the underlying theme in a student’s dress is inappropriate or distracting to the educational process, he/she will be requested to change. If the student refuses to comply, he/she will be sent home. Please refer to the student handbook for further details and information.

The following are general guidelines to be followed:

  • No headgear is to be worn in the High School.

  • Inappropriate exposure of midriff, backs, or chest area is not acceptable.

  • Extremely short skirts or dresses are not acceptable.

  • See-through garments are not acceptable.

  • Any apparel determined to be inappropriate by the building administration will not be permitted.

Please accept my sincere appreciation for your support. Best wishes for a continued safe and pleasant summer and I look forward to a great opening of school in September.

Sincerely,

John Merone
Principal
