Kayla Lewis to Attend
GYLC
(October
2006) RHS junior Kayla Lewis has been chosen to be a representative
to the Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC), a 13-day
summit in Europe made up of students from all over the world.
At the October 24th Board of Education meeting, Riverhead
resident Bobby Brown read the letter Kayla Lewis received
describing her upcoming adventure as a Global Young Leaders
Conference representative. She was then congratulated warmly
by the audience and by each member of the Board of Education
and the District Administration.
According to the letter, "Each session of the Global
Young Leaders Conference is designed to educate, inspire,
and motivate students by giving them the opportunity to
explore cultural differences firsthand, challenge diplomatic
skills daily, build confidence and enhance decision-making
skills in an exciting atmosphere that is challenging and
fun. . . Students return home from GYLC with a greater understanding
of their roles and responsibilities as citizens and future
leaders in an international community."
Kayla will have time to tour in Washington, DC and meet
with President Bush and other high level government officials.
The GYLC has both an American and a European Conference.
As a representative to the GYLC, she will also qualify for
travel to Vienna, Austria, Budapest, Hungary, and Prague.
Kayla's science teacher, Dan Haffner, nominated her for
this opportunity.
"She's the type of student who goes above and beyond,"
states Mr. Haffner. "I'm very happy that she's going
to have this amazing opportunity."
Kayla is an excellent student and hopes to own her own business
some day.
