WAY TO GO!
(October,
2006) RHS
senior Jasmin Aceituno was recently recognized in Newsday’s
(October 15) “Way to Go!” student column as
the recipient of the Paul Sisson Memorial Scholarship, created
by the Friends of the Riverhead Library. She received a
$400 scholarship to help finance her piano lessons from
Andrea Modugno at the East End Arts Council Community School
of the Arts. Jasmin has studied piano there for six years
and is an accomplished pianist.
She is also an outstanding scholar/athlete with an active
commitment to community service. In addition to being the
senior class secretary, she is the president of both the
French Honor Society and SADD (Students Against Destructive
Decisions). Jasmin is also a member of the National Honor
Society, Math Club, yearbook staff and the Community Awareness
Program (CAP). She writes for the school newspaper, is a
member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and helps tutor elementary
students.
Her skills as a pianist are shared with the members of her
church, Zion Ministries in Riverhead. She has performed
on many occasions, including events at the Riverhead Library
and at art gallery openings.
“I love to play the piano,” shares Jasmin, “and
I plan to continue to take lessons and play in college,
but I want to pursue a career as a linguist and become a
French and Spanish language teacher.”
Jasmin lives in Riverhead. Her parents are Gladys and Anibal
and she has two sisters, Jennifer and Genesis. This talented
young woman and the community’s support for her talent
is a terrific example of what can be done when the whole
community (i.e., the school, the library, the community
arts program) work together to encourage and nurture the
children in the community.
