Sixty-Seven
RHS students were inducted into the National Honor Society
(May
16, 2008 – Riverhead, NY) The inductees into Riverhead High School's
chapter of the National Honor Society have been chosen for the 2007-08
school year. The National Honor Society is more than just an honor roll.
Using national guidelines, the local chapter establishes rules for membership
that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas
of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Jennifer Mottern, the President of the National Honor Society, presented
the opening remarks and led the inductees in the Honor Society's pledge
during the Candle Ceremony.
According to advisor Laural Olsen, “Sixty-seven students were
inducted. This is the largest group of students to be inducted into
the National Honor Society since its inception in 1929.”
“This year’s inductees truly represent a cross section of
our student population," explains the group's other advisor, Deborah
MacLellan. "There are students who are outstanding in community
service, music, dance, languages, art and athletics as well as academics."
This year's officers included: Jennifer Mottern (President), Sarah Flannery
(VP), Natalie Fox (Secretary), and Jordan Talmage (Treasurer). Next
year's officers are Amanda Mallahy (President), Kelly Savage (VP), Lauren
Bonheim (Secretary), and Samantha Messina (Treasurer).
The mystery honorary member inducted this year was math teacher Dr.
Samuel Quaye. Dr. Quaye was presented with a scepter topped with an
ear of corn by the students, which reflects the fact that as an engineer
(prior to becoming a teacher) he was instrumental in the invention of
the corn husker. According to Mrs. Olsen, the students noted that "Dr.
Quaye is absolutely brilliant. He can challenge even the most outstanding
student, but also knows how to help the struggling student, while keeping
them all in stitches." One of Dr. Quaye's favorite sayings is "Excuses
killed the big, fat elephant."
The following students have met the above qualifications and were inducted
into Riverhead High School's chapter of the National Honor Society in

This year's National Honor Society members had two major fundraisers.
They raised $571 selling shamrocks for The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation,
as well as $600 through their Teacher's Pet Day fundraiser, which financed
13 gift bags to a local women's shelter during the holidays.
