high school juniors and seniors:
What does freedom mean to you?
Students invited to compete for $10,000 top prize--
(November 2007) Students in 11th and 12th grades are invited to enter
the New York Press Association Foundation's First Amendment Essay Contest,
sponsored locally by the newspapers in the Times/Review group: The Suffolk
Times, The News-Review, Shelter Island Reporter and The North Shore
Sun. Enter the contest by submitting a 500-word essay about one or more
of the freedoms protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution
to Times/Review co-publisher Denise Civiletti [dciviletti@timesreview.com]

The Times/Review editorial board will select one finalist from each
of the local high schools in our newspapers' coverage areas: Greenport,
Southold, Mattituck, Shelter Island, McGann-Mercy, Riverhead, Shoreham-Wading
River, Rocky Point, Longwood, Miller Place and Mount Sinai. Each finalist
will receive a $100 cash prize and an award certificate.
Times/Review will then select from among the finalists one winning essay
for each of our newspapers. The four winners will be entered in the
statewide contest. Each of the four winning authors will receive an
additional $250 cash prize. Winning essays will be printed in the newspaper
and all submissions will be posted on the newspaper's Web site.
The state press association foundation will judge the statewide contest.
The first place winner will receive a grand prize of $10,000 prize.
