COMMUNITY
SERVICE is
a major tenet of the Riverhead School District and is part of the
District's Character Education Program. Riverhead's students not
only strive for academic excellence but also perform many acts of
kindness and community service throughout the year. THEY'VE GOT
HEART!
Partial Overview: Students from RHS help plan and implement
many of the activities at the Relay
For Life which raised over $200,000 in 2007 for the American
Cancer Society. They often sponsor a Spooky Walk and Halloween celebration
for younger students. The National Honor Society trivia contest
fundraiser for St. Jude's Children's Hospital raised
over $1,600 for St. Jude's Children's Hospital last year.
Students also participate annually in a Key
Club "Be Homeless" fundraiser to raise funds and awareness
about the homeless on the East End; they also help organize a special
Health Awareness and Essential Work
Skills Day. The Interact Club works annually on a Habitat for
Humanity House, sponsors a Sr. Citizen Prom, and participates in
several other efforts throughout the year including the holiday
food baskets.
NJROTC cadets perform
over 300 community service hours a year. During the holidays they
coordinate a massive food basket program.
Almost all of the clubs at RHS participate in the "Angel
Tree" program initiated by the student government, which
helps make the holidays a little happier for needy children.
The RHS
Council for Unity is dedicated to providing a safe learning
environment for all of the schools' students. In the 2006-07 school
year, in addition to their service activities in the school, they
were instrumental in starting Council for Unity programs at the
Pulaski Street School, the Middle School, the Riverhead Jail, and
in a variety of other locations, including three nearby school districts.
All of the schools were involved in raising funds for the victims
of the Hurricane Katrina in the 2005-06 school year.
