Helping
others comes naturally for the students at RHS. For the third
year, members of the Student Government and their Advisors,
Theresa Drozd and Alice Blackmore, have organized the “Angel
Tree” project. Students, faculty and staff at RHS will
make the Christmas holiday a happier time for children living
in local shelters through this project.
Through the use of an “Angel Tree,” decorated with
paper angel ornaments bearing a description of the children
in the family, student, staff and faculty groups choose a family
by choosing an angel. This year's Angel Tree held the wishes
of 91 local children. The various school groups held bake sales
and other fundraisers, performed chores at home, and pooled
their money to buy gifts. They will purchase and wrap the gifts
and then they will be delivered to three local shelters to be
distributed to the children there.
The National Honor Society raised funds by selling 47 of their
members as “Teacher’s Pets,” for $10 each.
The pets performed errands, decorated classrooms and faculty
areas, took attendance, and did other tasks for the teachers.
In return, they raised $470 for their six children and, in the
English Office, earned a pizza party for themselves.
“It was really fun,” shared teacher’s pet
Jessica Lamont. “We worked for Doc Greenberger and he
had us doing all sorts of crazy things. We also decorated his
classroom.”
This year was even more rewarding for these caring high school
students. They received a visit and special recognition from
a representative from the Department of Social Services, Dennis
Nowack. Mr. Nowack commended these young people for their thoughtfulness.
They are high school angels.
