Zone Award Winners

Reid Groth, Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education
for the Riverhead Central School District has announced
the names of the 2003 recipients of the prestigious New
York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance – Suffolk Zone Award.
This year’s recipients are Edward Wansor and Amanda
Kowalsick both seniors at Riverhead High School. The winners
will be honored at a dinner at West Lake in Patchogue on
Wednesday, December 3, 2003.
Amanda Kowalsick has a weighted grade point average of 102.6.
She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign
Language Honor Society. She placed on the High Honor Roll
in grades 9 through 11. She has applied to a number of colleges
and universities including the University of Delaware, Quinnipiac,
Roger Williams and Providence College. She plans to study
chemistry and pursue a career in forensics. Her list of
athletic activities includes Softball, Soccer, and Winter
Track. Amanda is a member of the Key Club, Leo Club, Leaders
Club and the Community Action Program. She works as a math
tutor in her spare time and is a Relay for Life volunteer.
Amanda’s athletic honors include: All League and All
Division in softball and All League in Winter Track.
Edward Wansor has maintained a grade point average of 100
during his four years of high school. He is a member of
the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society
and the school newspaper. Athletically, he is a member of
the Football, Winter Track and Lacrosse teams. His honors
include All-County in Football, All Conference in Lacrosse
and All League in Winter Track. Eddie would like to pursue
his undergraduate degree at Duke, Cornell or Princeton.
The Suffolk Zone Award criteria demand a high level of physical
fitness, strong participation in school and community activities,
evidence of leadership roles, community involvement and
academic excellence.
