Middle
School Math Scholars Named
(November
2006) CONGRATULATIONS - RMS students Adam
Hubert and Sean Harkin are two of 75 students to be named
Long Island Young Scholars of Mathematics and have been
accepted into the Institute of Creative Problem Solving
for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY College at Old
Westbury to pursue mathematics and science studies.
To qualify for this honor, they competed against 950 of
the top ranking students on LI. Selection by the institute
implies that a student is among the top 1/10th of 1% in
math of all students on Long Island in his or her grade.
They will spend 60 hours in class during 20 Saturday mornings
and 60 hours on related outside projects.
So far, they have studied geometry, number theory, logic,
architecture, graphing and learned how to use graphing calculators.
"I enjoyed the unit on architecture," noted Adam.
"We had to draw a building with an atrium to scale.
Each of the units have been presented in an interesting
way, so it's been fun. Math is my favorite subject, so I'm
really enjoying being part of this group of students."
"I'm actually more interested in music than I am in
math," explained Sean, "but I think you use the
same side of the brain for both music and math, and so I'm
hoping it will help me with both subjects."
Both of the students are also in Math A at RMS taught by
Ms. Passanante.
