RMS
OLYMPIADS BRING HOME THE SILVER IN BALLOON RACE!
The
2006 Winter Olympics in Torino are over, and now
it’s time to celebrate the 2006 Middle School Science
Olympiads in Riverhead for their participation at the Eastern
Long Island Science Olympiad B Division held recently at
the Candlewood Middle
School
in Dix Hills, New York. Riverhead Middle School Science
Olympiads placed second in the Balloon Race and won silver
medals. Thirty-nine schools from Long Island participated
in the event and the top five (Three Village, Dix Hills,
Port Jefferson, Springs and R.C. Murphy Junior High School)
will represent our region at the State Science Olympiad
in April.
The Science Olympiad
is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving
the quality of science education, increasing student interest
in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement
in science education by both students and teachers.
According to the team’s
advisor, Kristen Hazard, a graduate of RHS and a science
teacher at RMS, “The Science Olympiad at this regional
level is designed to be a fun way to motivate students and
increase their interest in science by encouraging them to
prepare for team events that test their knowledge in biology,
earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology.
Our team had a great time and we’re already looking
forward to next year’s Olympiad.”
The events require a knowledge
of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science
applications, but they also recognize enthusiasm, spirit
and the ability to work as a team under pressure. The events
and their names are a reflection of the intent of the day,
which is to give students, who are interested in science,
a fun and educational way to explore that interest. Some
of the events included: Wheeled Vehicle, Storm the Castle,
Sound of Music, Solar System, Rocks and Minerals, Road Scholar,
Mystery Architecture, Mission Possible, Don’t Bug
Me, Crave the Wave, Bridge Building, Balloon Race and Food
Chemistry.
In addition, during
the day there are open house activities that consist of
science and mathematics demonstrations, activities and career
counseling sessions conducted by professors and scientists
at the host institution occurring concurrently with the
events.
