Seventh
graders in the state of New York study the Revolutionary War
as part of their American History curriculum. Several members
of the Third New York/Long Island Regiment, Revolutionary
War re-enactors visited the Riverhead Middle School students
to enliven their studies of the Revolutionary War by sharing
with the students their gear, cooking demonstrations, drills
and their insights on what the life of a soldier was like
in those early days of our nation’s struggle for independence
through an actual re-enactment on the lawn behind the Riverhead
Middle School.
In addition to the re-enactment, Steve Thorenz visited with
the students in the library a day prior to the re-enactment
to make sure the students had a good overview of a soldier's
life before they actually experienced it themselves.
“This is just one of the ways we try to make history
come alive for our students,” noted RMS social studies
teacher Chris Butterfield, “but it’s one of the
events the students seem to enjoy the most.
