Students Get Razor-Close Look at Philanthropy
(April
20, 2007) Riverhead, NY – Riverhead Middle School English
teacher Emily Sills has issued a daring challenge: If the
RMS students, faculty and staff raise $5,000 for the school’s
Relay for Life team from April 19 to May 25, she will shave
her curly brown hair. The final twist? The student lunch period
that raises the most money toward meeting the goal will get
to witness the buzz-cut live.

7th
Graders Explore Long Island
(May
2007) Riverhead is bordered by the Peconic River and the Great
Peconic Bay on the south and the Long Island Sound on the
north. Its unique location and glacial origin offers Riverhead
students a rich scientific learning experience. Seventh graders
recently used a day at the beach to enhance their studies
in the classroom. More

Middle
School Participates in STEP
(April
2007) Riverhead Middle School has approximately 15 students
who participate in a Saturday program at Suffolk County Community
College entitled the Science and Technology Entry
Program (STEP). STEP focuses on developing career
awareness, basic skills, and real world mathematics, science
and technology applications and research for 7th-12th grade
students. Recently, a number of those students participated
in the STEP Science Fair
held at SCCC's Ammerman campus.

Middle
School Math Scholars Named
(November 2006) CONGRATULATIONS RMS students
Adam Hubert and Sean Harkin are two of 75 students to be named
Long Island Young Scholars of Mathematics and have been accepted
into the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted
and Talented Students at SUNY College at Old Westbury to pursue
mathematics and science studies.

Middle
School Honor Concert Band Festival Winners
(
November 2006) Two RMS musicians, Andrew Plattner and Ernest
Mc-Millan, are among the 97 students, who have been chosen
from 230 applicants, to participate in the New York State
Band Directors’ Association’s Middle School Honor
Concert Band Festival in Syracuse, NY in early March. Andrew,
who plays clarinet, received a perfect score on his level
4 NYSSMA solo. Ernest received 27 out of a possible 28 points
on his trombone solo.
