OVERVIEW OF RILEY AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Riley
Avenue is one of four K-4 elementary schools in the district. It
is located on Riley Avenue in the community of Calverton. It's a short one mile hike from the
L.I. Sound. The Riley
Avenue School is the most rural of the Riverhead schools--but no
longer surrounded by fields. It's student population has grown to over 640 students.
Riley has a full day kindergarten program, a self-contained special education class and a resource room.
The NYS Education Department has recognized Riley as a “high achieving” school!
"Student achievement at Riley Avenue remains high due to our
staff
and our partnership with you," states Riley Principal
David Enos.
Ms. Jeanne Grim is the Riley Avenue Assistant Principal. Ms. Grim's phone number is 369-6805. Her email address is jeanne.grim@riverhead.net.
School Goals
-
SCHOOL-WIDE GOALS AT RILEY AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
At Riley, we want our pupils to truly enjoy their lower primary years as they learn and grow.We want to recognize our parents for their ongoing support of our school. We welcome and appreciate you as partners in the education of our students. The solid home/school connection that we have at Riley Avenue is one of the main reasons why we have been successful.
The following areas are the major goals in the 2012-13 school year:
1. Emphasis on critical thinking and high level lesson planning across the curriculum.2. Continued implementation of all aspects of our balanced literacy approach, with special attention to writing, including quality, stamina, and volume.
3. Successful implementation of our enVision math program K-4.
4. Character education with an ongoing emphasis on community service, a.k.a. “Riley Reaches Out.”
5. Wellness, with an emphasis on healthy choices.
6. Maintaining a safe and secure learning environment.
Special Programs
SPECIAL PROGRAMS AT RILEY AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Riley
Avenue has a strong cultural arts committee which offers programming that
stimulates student interest in the arts through programs like the
Author or Artist in Residence program. All areas
of the curriculum celebrate student learning: social studies
wax museums and Nigerian jamborees, class-to-class reading and math
buddies, a schoolwide art show, publishing parties and celebrations,
a school-wide science fair, and many, many community partnerships
provide safety programs and service learning experiences.
Many of Riley's parents bring their expertise into the
classroom to provide enrichment to the curriculum through special
reading and writing programs or through some application of their
scientific knowledge. The Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) Week is a fun reading event that usually occurs in March.
Riley's Before School Childcare (i.e., Riley's Kids) program is often the organizing arm that involves the entire school in efforts to reach out to the Riverhead community through clothing and food drives, or special knitting projects for children in the hospital, letters and supplies for soldiers in Iraq, or gift bags for shut-ins.
