THE DICTIONARY PROJECT
Riverhead 3rd Graders Receive Dictionaries from Kiwanis Club via The Dictionary Project
(September 2008 - Riverhead, NY) According to the Kiwanis Club, there are 4,170,598 third-grade students in the United States. Their goal is to make sure that every one of them receives a dictionary from a local chapter of Kiwanis. On September 25, the third graders at the Roanoke Avenue Elementary School, one of four elementary schools in the district, were the first third grade students to receive their paperback copy of Webster’s Worldwide English/Spanish, Spanish/English Dictionary. >More

Roanoke
Students Excel in Garden Club Competition
(October
2007) The
Riverhead Garden Club has adopted the students at the Roanoke Avenue
School as part of their educational outreach program. This fall
inspired by the theme "Harvest of Arts and Flowers," Pat
Carey and Kathy Taylor, master gardeners and co-chairs of the education
unit of the Garden Club, helped students create dried flower arrangements
with an accompanying watercolor painting of a window scene called
"In the Studio" for the Hofstra Flower Show. Competing
in the Intermediate (ages 8-12) student competition at the show,
Roanoke students brought home a bounty of winning awards:

Honors Library/Media Teacher Marge Lawrence
(October
2007) One thousand teachers at 1,000 schools across the United
States were surprised with in-class ceremonies featuring more
than $1 million worth of donated school supplies (nearly $1,200
worth per school) in October, as OfficeMax® Incorporated kicked
off its 'A
Day Made Better' campaign to eliminate 'teacher-funded' classrooms.
Every Office Max retail store collaborated with a principal, who
nominated one of the teachers in their school who exemplifies
a passion for learning and innovative classroom techniques. The
teacher chosen in the Riverhead Central School District was Marge
Lawrence, who is the Library/Media teacher at the Roanoke Avenue

Roanoke
Students "Ride the Reading Wave" with Keri Stromski
(August
2007) Riverhead resident Keri Stromski initiated a summer reading
program for the Roanoke students who wanted to participate. Ms.
Stromski, who lives in Jamesport, has been a first grade teacher
at Roanoke for 9 years. She wants to keep kids reading over the
summer and, as a resident of Riverhead, she devised this program
entitled "Ride the Reading Wave" to keep the Roanoke
kids reading.
