Students "Ride the Reading Wave" with Keri Stromski
Riverhead
resident Keri Stromski initiated a summer reading program
for the Roanoke students who wanted to participate. Ms. Stromski,
who lives in Jamesport, has been a first grade teacher at
Roanoke for 9 years. She wants to keep kids reading over the
summer and, as a resident of Riverhead, she devised this program
entitled "Ride the Reading Wave" to keep the Roanoke
kids reading. More<

Celebrates History
The Roanoke Avenue School was built in 1924 and it was recently
declared a historical landmark building. On Friday, October
22, Richard Wines, the Chairperson of the Landmarks Preservation
Commission, presented an official landmark designation plaque
to the school district. Mrs. Berezny, who was instrumental
in nominating the Roanoke School for this designation, received
the plaque on behalf of the district.

Book
of the Month Club at Roanoke
Roanoke
Principal Debra Rodgers loves a good book, and she wants the
students in her school to have that as a common experience.
On Friday, September 8, the second day of school, she had
the first of her monthly “Book of the Month Club”
assemblies. More

Poetry Jams are "A Happening"
April
is National Poetry Month and the nation celebrates its poets
and their poetry. Connor, Fabiola, Ronshique, Mieko Anne,
Anthony, Tyhasiah are all the names of published poets. Their
publishers are their teachers, Mrs. Kent and Ms. LoMagno,
and the poets are in second grade, but their poetry is as
fun and inspirational as the poets they emulate.

Principal at Roanoke
Debra
Rodgers has been chosen as the new principal at the Roanoke
Avenue School. (Dot Trondle retired after serving as principal
at the school for 14 years.) Her motto: "Shoot
for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars."

Kindergarteners Celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day
Catherine
Kent's and Kathleen Horn's kindergarten classes at the Roanoke
Avenue School have been reading about Johnny Appleseed's life.
Their classes celebrated "Johnny Appleseed Day"
together by tasting apples, graphing responses, reading stories,
playing games, making homemade applesauce and observing the
scientific changes to the apples.

Heroes
at Roanoke
"September 10th was Garfield Langhorn's birthday. Garfield
Langhorn is a hero," read the "fabulous, fantastic"
first grade students in Keri Stromski's class at the Roanoke
Avenue School. "He was in the Army and he gave his life
for his friends," these little students read from the
tiny books they had made about Garfield Langhorn's life for
Garfield Langhorn Day.
