WLIW/WNET Ready to Learn Grant

One man’s generosity fosters a love of reading
for hundreds of kids

We want to thank the Hagedorn family,” states Roanoke Library and Media Specialist Marge Lawrence. “They are generously continuing the Ready to Learn Program started by Horace Hagedorn in conjunction with WLIW/WNET.

The students receive a book a month through their teachers in this program.

“When this program promised to use television as a vehicle for encouraging reading, I was very skeptical,” explained Mrs. Lawrence, “but then I read the study concerning the use of ‘learning triangles’.” A learning triangle includes: reading a book, making smart TV viewing choices which support the reading, and doing a related activity.

The parent component ensures everyone is on the same page. A team of special area teachers have received two days of training and provided two parent workshops, with two more planned. Each workshop was offered once during the day and twice in the evening--in English and Spanish. Additional books for families can only be obtained by attending a workshop.
