SPORTS - COACHES
Dan Vallance was chosen as the Section XI - League 8 JV Girls Soccer Coach of the Year 2007. Mr. David Spinella won Coach of the Year Section XI Varsity Girls Basketball. A list of the coaches for this season's sports.


Top Physical Education Award
The 2007-08 PE Zone Award went to Ashley Bell and John Andrejack. Ashley Bell and Tim Velys were named the Athletes of the Year by the News Review.

2007-08 Sportsmanship & Scholar/Athlete Team Awards
In the Fall 2007 sports season, the Riverhead High School Blue Waves were awarded 7 (out of a possible 10) "Scholar/Athlete Team Awards." In addition the Varsity Cheerleaders won a Scholar/Athlete Team Award. Three teams won the Fall 2007 "Team Sportsmanship Award."

In the Winter 2008 sports season, the Riverhead High School Blue Waves were awarded 5 "Scholar/Athlete Team Awards." In addition four teams won the Winter 2008" Team Sportsmanship Award." The Girls Varsity Basketball Team were the League IV Champs. >More

In the Spring 2008 sports season, the Riverhead High School Blue Waves were awarded 5 "Scholar/Athlete Team Awards." In addition the Riverhead Athletic Department has been nominated for the 2007-08 Section XI Sportsmanship Award. This would mark the second time the Blue Waves have distinguished themselves in this area. >More

Championships, Awards and Scholarships
Fall 2007 - Three Riverhead field hockey players were honored at the Suffolk County Coaches Association Awards dinner. Senior Ashley Bell was named All-Division. Julie Dougherty and Jackie Zilnicki were awarded All-County honorable mention.

Fall 2007 -
Five RHS soccer players were recognized at the Suffolk County Association Awards dinner: Kayla Lewis – All League, Kelly Dillon – All League, Brigit Burgio – All Conference, Liz Tilton – All League, Ellie Markewitz – All Conference

Fall 2007 - Three Riverhead varsity volleyball players were honored at the Suffolk County Coaches Association Awards dinner. Riverhead High Schools Varsity Volleyball player Julia Morrow (Sophomore) received an All-League award. Also receiving All-League Honorable Mention awards were Amanda Mallahy (Junior), and Brittany Denninger (Senior). Stats

2004 Scholar/Athlete Team Award
In the Spring of 2004 sports season, the Riverhead High School Blue Waves were awarded the "Scholar/Athlete Team Award" by the NY State Public High School Athletic Association for "outstanding scholastic achievement by varsity level student athletes." Not only are our athletes outstanding competitors, they are also "scholars." In addition, the school's teams are well-known each year for their sportsmanship awards.

2005 Section XI “Good Sports” Award Winners
In the Fall of 2005, the Riverhead Blue Waves were awarded the 2005 Section XI “Good Sports” Award. Riverhead’s teams scored the highest overall average of sportsmanship team points. The teams are rated by opposing teams and awarded by NYPHSAA.


Physical Education Course Offerings
The district also offers a full range of physical education courses.

Intramurals and Special Programs

In addition to interscholastic sports, the district has an excellent intramural and physical education program.

The Intramural Golf Team thanks the Cherry Creek Country Club for their generous donation of 200 golf clubs to the school's golf program.

Some of the special programs the Physical Education Department have participated in include the Core-Based Fitness Training Program, the Coca Cola Corporation's Step-O-Meter Program, Project Adventure classes, the Rowing Club, the Outdoors Club and the President's Fitness Challenge.
