Riverhead Technology

INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY INTO THE CURRICULUM
The Technology Teams from the Riverhead School District made
a strong showing at the Fourth Annual Celebration of Technology
held recently at the Stony Brook University Sports Complex.
Over 250 teacher and student exhibitors from school districts
on Eastern Long Island demonstrated how they integrate technology
into their classroom instruction.
The annual event, organized by The Model Schools Program of
Eastern Suffolk BOCES, addresses the importance of integrating
technology into classroom instruction. Teachers and students
demonstrated their work “LIVE” all day. In addition
to the student presenters, there were many corporate partners
present, who provided the technology and the support to make
the event possible. As a special acknowledgement to the students,
Congressman Tim Bishop honored participants with special Certificates
of Congressional Recognition.
The projects from Riverhead School District included the following
presentations:
Working with Marge Lawrence in the computer lab, students
from three third grade classes at the Roanoke Avenue School
used print and non-print materials to amass information on
Japan. After their research, each student used their research
to design one slide for a PowerPoint presentation. After each
had designed a slide, the teachers put the slides together
to form a very complete presentation on Japan.
Middle School students in Kevin Brennon’s “Introduction
to Technology Education” class participated in a Webquest
to climb Mount Everest. (Webquests are teacher-guided lessons
designed to involve students in a collaborative learning and
research experience.) In addition to increasing their research
and technological skills, students participating in the Internet
simulation, increased their understanding of world geography,
earth science and biology.
An after school club made up of 27 Pulaski Street School students
worked with special education teacher and club advisor Eileen
Gorman to create a school website: (www.pulaskistreet.net).
Riverhead High School students in Christopher Malanga’s
Robotics Club created three robots for demonstration. One
robot built of Legos, dubbed Robotype, was programmed to type
various words on a keyboard using Lego Mindstorms. That project
was assembled from plans using advanced soldering techniques.
Another robotic device was an arm that used several motors
to move in different directions. C++ programming language
was used to actuate the motors. This arm could perform several
tasks at the discretion of the students. One programmed movement
was created to crush and transport cans to a drop-off point.
Lisa Pankowski made a small sound sensitive robot that simulated
the response of human hearing by changing its direction when
a loud sound was made in front of its sensor (i.e., the stamping
of Lisa’s foot would change the robot’s direction).
Finally, Chris Carron, working with Derek Matuszewski and
Pawel Kurzyna, wrote, directed and filmed a short public announcement
film on “Bullying,” that was recognized by Victor
Labozzetta, a digital media specialist for Apple, as one of
two “outstanding videos” of the 12 submitted for
viewing at the Celebration.
“Chris’ entry was a phenomenally good video for
a high school student,” stated Mr. Labozetta, who was
playing the videos.
In addition, Riverhead’s Assistant Superintendent for
Curriculum and Instruction, Peggie Staib, was recognized,
along with several other administrators from throughout Long
Island, for her effort in promoting the integration of technology
in the classroom.
