Message from Principal Phil Kent
Dear Aquebogue Families and Community Members,
Welcome to the 2009-10 school year. While this year brings some exciting changes to our school, we look forward to continuing to work together as a TEAM for the benefit of all our students. We will continue to offer a supportive and nurturing environment with wonderful opportunities for all students to meet their full potential as learners.
As you know, Aquebogue has a strong teaching staff dedicated to providing the best educational opportunities available to our students in a safe and friendly environment. Once again this summer, many of our staff members participated in Columbia University’s Teachers College advanced reading and writing workshops. These workshops provided our teachers with ideas and additional information as they continue to build upon their teaching craft while addressing the individual needs of all our students. In addition, our Third Grade Teachers worked during the summer months to develop and prepare lessons for the implementation and continuation of our phonics and spelling program called Fundations. Fundations provides children of varying learning abilities with a foundation for reading and spelling. It provides teachers with the skills and tools needed to present a structured, sequential, and cumulative phonics/spelling program using multisensory teaching techniques. All students in grades K-3 will receive the Fundations program within their classroom. In addition, we are proud to be at the forefront in the expansion of technology with additional Smartboards installed in more classrooms. The Smartboard will help teachers enhance their lessons and learning environment while preparing our students for the technology-driven world that we live in.
We are all fortunate to be supported by an active PTO. This dedicated group believes in working together to develop strong partnerships with teachers and administrators so that we all may serve in the best interests of the children. I encourage every parent to join the PTO and become a more active participant in your child’s education. Please continue to ask questions and maintain consistent communication with your child’s teacher throughout the year.
As we look forward to an exciting school year, I hope that you will make an effort to attend the many wonderful events that Aquebogue Elementary and the Riverhead Central School District has to offer to you and your children.
Sincerely,
Phil Kent
