Aquebogue named one of NY State's "high
performing/gap closing schools"
Three
of the district’s elementary schools, Aquebogue, Phillips
Avenue and Roanoke Avenue, were recognized this summer as
three of New York State’s 574
“high performing/gap closing” schools.
They
won the designation because between the two-year period of
the 2002-03 and 2003-04 school years, they “made outstanding
progress in closing the gap in performance among their diverse
student populations”.
Richard
P. Mills, the NY State Commissioner of Education wrote, “You
and your entire school community are to be commended for leading
New York forward to accomplish our dual goals of increasing
student achievement.”
Only
schools that had a minimum of 30 continuously enrolled students
in at least two racial ethnic groups or in one of the low-income,
limited English proficient, or student with disabilities accountability
groups were eligible for recognition. Statewide, there were
2,041 public and charter schools that met these eligibility
criteria.
“I’m
very proud of the students and staff at the Aquebogue School,”
states Aquebogue Principal Phil Kent. “They both worked
very hard for this distinction. We’re very excited about
the beginning of a new school year and look forward to continuing
the implementation of new teaching and testing strategies
to help our students achieve success."
According
to Commissioner Mills, if the schools continued to meet the
eligibility requirements for recognition based on its 2004-2005
school year results, they will be invited to participate in
a symposium regarding school success.
