Saving
the Sea: A Mosaic Created at Aquebogue

(June 2007) Throughout
the month of April and as part of the Earth Day theme, 420 of the students
in the Aquebogue School worked with Mrs. Ahern, the school’s art
teacher, and artists-in-residence Marta Baumiller (Aquebogue) and Julie
Tesser (Brooklyn) to create an amazing ceramic wall mosaic made entirely
of old broken or chipped china, ceramic tiles, plates, mugs, beach class,
rocks, shells, glass marbles and other colorful items. The donations
from the students were broken into small pieces and used to make a 4
foot x 22 foot mosaic of underwater life entitled "Saving the Sea."
The first step was to sketch the entire drawing. It was then broken
into 22 squares that could be worked on comfortably. Next, the students
grouted their completed squares, and, finally, the squares were fitted
together to form the final 4 foot x 22 foot mosaic. Each child in the
school participated in some way to make the mural. It was financed through
a $2,000 matching grant from the East End Arts Council.
The mosaic was mounted high on the wall in the cafetorium and a special
picnic and concert was held to share it with the school community. It’s
amazing!
