Each
year the third grade students at Aquebogue raise funds by selling
their art at the PTO's annual craft fair and throughout the year
to help finance a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. An active
PTO and an annual craft fair help support cultural arts events of
this nature.
Aquebogue's 75th birthday birthday
celebration included a visit from one of its famous alumni, Dr.
Marshall Jones, a famous scientist, inventor and the author of a
memoir entitled "Never Give Up".
Several murals adorn the walls of Aquebogue. As part of a Cultural
Arts-in-Education project, under the direction of art teacher Maureen
Ahern and local artist John DiNaro, every student was able to take
part in painting another mural during his/her art class. The mural
was painted on five 8-foot panels and now hangs on the wall outside
our Cafetorium. Inside the Cafetorium, several large murals, including
an amazing ceramic wall mosaic made entirely of old broken or chipped
china, ceramic tiles, plates, mugs, beach class, rocks, shells,
glass marbles and other colorful items. The donations from the students
were broken into small pieces and used to make a 4 foot x 22 foot
mural of underwater life entitled "Saving
the Sea."
A popular American history unit includes every part of the curriculum,
music, art, timelines, writing and reading skills. Included within
this unit is a visit from a feew members of Revolutionary War re-enactors,
some of whom were students at Aquebogue.
Aquebogue Elementary School's "Odyssey
of the Mind" Team brought home a second place trophy in
its first foray into the "Odyssey of the Mind"
competition! The team chose Global Warming as their theme in the
competition and performed their skit during Aquebogue's annual week
long celebration of Earth
Day. Taking care of the earth is a popular learning theme at
this elementary school that is surrounded by beauty. Two major sculpture
projects (Bottle
Bug and PolyBear)
with recycling themes have been celebrated in Scholastic News'
Earth Day edition.
The
students, families and staff at Aquebogue have lots of heart, and
the students have consistently used their hearts (and their legs
and arms) to show their willingness to help. Each spring, they jump
rope or shoot hoops to raise money for the American
Heart Association.
