Aquebogue Elementary School News

March, 2004

Notes from Mr. Kent:

Is it Spring yet? The students here at Aquebogue keep asking me. I know that we all look forward to the Spring Season!

Our District’s Teachers and Administrators have finalized a new report card. This new report card will reflect the updates we have made to our curriculum areas based on the early Literacy Guidelines and the New York State Standards. The new report card will be ready in time for the April distribution. We are currently planning 3 opportunities for all parents to view a copy of the report card and have a discussion with the Report Card Committee. The first opportunity will be at the March 15th PTO meeting. Next, we plan to hold a discussion on Wednesday, March 24th from 7-8 P.M. Also, all Teachers are planning an informational meeting during the day on April 14th (School will not be in session for children on this date.) We hope that you will be able to make it to one of these informational meetings!

As we continue to work towards creating Harmony and a Positive Atmosphere throughout our building, we ask that you continue to remind your child about the importance of being respectful and kind to others! HAPPY SPRING!

Science Fair: This year’s Science Fair was a big success. It was held on March 4th at RHS. All classes submitted a group project and many individual students submitted their own. A bagel breakfast was given for the individual project winners! Congratulations to everyone for a job well done!

Room 6 News: First graders from Room 6 learned about making healthier snack choices when parent, Nancy Jacob, visited the class and talked about fruits and vegetables and their nutritional content. Children then made their own trail mix of banana chips, dried cranberries, raisins, sunflower seeds and almonds. A healthy treat was enjoyed by all!

Students have been writing book reports twice a month on library books that they have chosen. In addition to the written reports, the children have been creating projects related to the books like stick puppets of a story character, bookmarks, etc. Report/project sharing is very motivational to others to borrow and read the books their friends have reported on.

Room 6 students celebrated the 100th Day of School by making hats of 100 objects and necklaces of 100 beads, reading The One Hundredth Day of School and collecting, with the help of the other grades, 100 cans of food to be donated to a local food pantry. Thank you to all who donated!

Second Grade News: The second grades have been busy with so many fun activities this past month! We celebrated the 100th day of school by compiling different lists of 100 things. Each classroom had a different assignment. The results are hanging in the hall by the cafeteria. Come see them!
We all went on a field trip to the dinosaur museum at Stony Brook University where we learned more about the dinosaurs and we even got to make a replica of a fossil to take home.

On March 16th, we saw a play entitled “Where is That Bear?” at the Staller Center in Stony Brook.

Meanwhile, the teachers have the tough job of choosing some of our student’s best writing samples to send to “Child’s Play Touring Theatre” which will perform some of the stories for us in May.

We continue to learn more about energy in science and many students submitted an experiment for the Science Fair at the high school.

Third Grade News
: The third graders enjoyed wonderful Valentine parties with treats and surprises, followed by a refreshing vacation. Many students traveled, bowled, had sleepovers and went to the movies. Hopefully everyone read over the mid-winter recess.

February was Black History Month. The students worked on profiling famous Black Americans. Some of the students dressed up as their character-Garrett Morgan, Phyllis Wheatley, etc. and gave reports. It was interesting and very informative.

News from the Library
: Aquebogue students celebrated the 100th birthday of Dr. Seuss on March 2nd. Fourth grade students read a Dr. Seuss book to each and every classroom- KUDOS fourth graders, for a job well done. At lunch, our readers celebrated with a Cat in the Hat cake in the library. Library classes were treated to a little snack of green eggs and ham after reading the Dr. Seuss book of Green Eggs and Ham.

An assembly on March 2nd kicked off the annual World Book “Partners in Excellence” reading program. Hopefully we are reading and locating sponsors. Informational packets went home with the students. If there are any questions, please contact Mrs. Olsen.

Bits and Bytes from the Computer Lab
: First through fourth grade students have been truly inspired in the Computer Lab. They learned how to use a graphics organizing program entitled Inspiration! This is the type of program we all wished we had in school. After getting all your thoughts organized into bubbles, with a click of the button, it magically turns into an outline that you can then use to write your paper with! Talk about Inspiration! Second through fourth grades are beginning their Power Point presentations. Towards the end of the school year, parents will be invited in to see their fantastic work. Kindergarten, first and pre-first finished up with Jumpstart Phonics and are moving on with Reader Rabbit’s Interactive Reading Journey.
