Kids eye sun-powered boat
Greenport project still must raise $2,200

One thing has led to another for students in Riverhead High School science teacher Bob Jester's research apprenticeship class.

The students are now hoping to turn an electric boat in Greenport into a satellite learning center and to install solar panels that could not only power the boat, but also generate additional power that would go back into the village electrical grid.

They've got the support of the boat's owners and they even made a presentation on their proposal before the Greenport Village Board earlier this year. >Page 1 and Page 2

Council for Unity grows bigger
More than 100 new members inducted

Riverhead's Council for Unity welcomed more than 100 new members last Wednesday night at its annual induction ceremony at Giorgio's at Fox Hill in Baiting Hollow. More than 300 people were in attendance.

The council is a program that aims to teach conflict resolution and self-esteem. It has been part of the Riverhead Central School District for five years and now has chapters in the high school, middle school and Pulaski Street School, as well as a parent and community chapter and a chapter at the Suffolk County jail, according to Liz Stokes, a parent and community chapter member who helped organize the induction ceremony. The Riverhead Police Department also teaches the program at Riverhead schools. >More
