The 2004 RHS National
Honor Society Inductees
The inductees into Riverhead High School's chapter
of the National Honor Society have been chosen for
the 2004-05 school year. The National Honor Society
is more than just an honor roll. Based on National
guidelines, the local chapter establishes rules for
membership that are based upon a student's outstanding
performance in the areas of scholarship, service,
leadership, and character.
Christine, the president of the National Honor Society
and the salutatorian of the Class of 2004, presented
the opening remarks and led the inductees in the pledge
during the Candle Ceremony.
According to advisor Laural Olsen, “This year
there were 101 students academically eligible for
the Honor Society and 63 students, who were chosen
to be inducted. This is the largest group of students
to be inducted into the National Honor Society since
its inception in 1929.There was an increase of about
20% over last year.”
This year's inductees into the National Honor Society
reflect the success of several recent innovations
in teaching within the district.
“This year’s inductees truly represent
a cross section of our student population," explains
the group's other advisor, Deborah MacLellan. "There
are students who are outstanding in community service,
music, dance, languages, art and athletics as well
as academics. There are students from our English
as a Second Language courses and for the first time
we had two students whose induction reflects the success
of our collaborative learning classes."
This year's officers include: Danielle, Laura, Kerriann
and Kristen. The mystery honorary members inducted
this year were teachers Scott and Dave McKillop.
