Message
from Mr. Payton and Ms. Nugent
Dear Phillips Avenue Families,
Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year! I hope you had an enjoyable summer and are excited as we are for the school year to begin. We would like to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Ms. Patty Nugent to Phillips Ave School.
We will continue to implement the Teachers’ College approach to balanced literacy. All grades will continue to focus on literacy instruction during reading and writing workshop sessions. Many of our staff members participated in a Teachers’ College advanced reading training over the summer. Professional development will continue throughout the year, within Phillips and at the district level.
Fundations is a program that incorporates phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling for the general education classroom. Fundations is based upon the Wilson Reading System® principles and is a prevention program to assist in reducing reading and spelling failure.
All students in grades K-2 will receive the Fundations program within their classroom. This program will serve as the handwriting program for these grades as well. The district provided initial training sessions for our teachers and they will receive follow-up training throughout the year in the building.
We will implement the Everyday Math program in grades K-4 as we did last year. Through the collaborative efforts of our staff we know our students will continue to excel in this area.
As you know, the district adopted a Uniform Code of Dress policy starting in all K-4 buildings this school year. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the implementation of this policy.
Reading Week, Story and Snack and award assembly traditions will continue at Phillips Avenue. We encourage you to attend all events at Phillips Avenue and look forward to seeing you. A strong home-school connection within our Phillips learning community will assist all students in becoming life-long learners. Please contact us if you have any concerns or questions. We wish you and your family a successful school year.
Sincerely,
Mr. Thomas Payton and Ms. Patty Nugent
