Playground - Phase I Dedication Ceremony
(November,
2004) It was a cold and windy November day, but the eager
students at the Phillips Avenue School cheered enthusiastically
as Interim Principal Charles Venezia called on them to thank
all of the parent association (PAPA) volunteers who worked
so hard to raise the funds for Phase I of their new playground.
Another cheer went up for the district's maintenance workers
who assembled all of the equipment.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria congratulated the
school on working together to ensure the fun factor for "the
most important people in the school district--our students."
Then Dr. Laria and Mrs. Prete cut the ribbon and a huge cheer
went up from the children.
"My
boys went to this school," explained Mrs. Prete, "and
I'm so proud of all of you for warking so hard for the schools
and students of this district."
PAPA co-president Meigan Rocco noted that the equipment was
replacing an old "tire playground" and that it could
service about 95 children at a time. She also stated that
it was primarily for grades 2-4 and that it cost approximately
$20,000. The new unit is just Phase I of three phases planned
for completing the playground. They're hoping to install Phase
II in June.
Much of the money for the playground comes from yearly fundraisers
that PAPA conducts for the school. A large portion of the
money raised so far came from their annual Chinese Auction
last March. The next fundraising event is their Holiday Boutique
in December.
If anyone is interested in donating money toward the playground
or participating in upcoming projects, please contact Co-Presidents
Jeanette Ott at 369-2823 or Meigan Rocco at 369-3240.
