Rotary Donates School Supplies to Phillips

In August, Dr. Marilyn McLaughlin, acting on behalf of the Rotary Club, contacted Madlyn Davis at the Phillips Avenue School. She explained to Ms. Davis, a secretary at the Phillips Avenue School, that the Rotary was interested in "adopting" a school and wanted to provide all the school supplies necessary for as many students as they could.

Ms. Davis sat down with Ellen Schnabel, a kindergarten teacher, and came up with a "wish list" for each student:

backpack
black & white marble composition books
pocket folders
crayons, markers, scissors
pencils, erasers, dry erase markers, highlighters
looseleaf paper
tissues
pencil pouches/crayon boxes
liquid glue and/or glue sticks
pens (blue/black) for grades 3 & 4 only

Dr. McLaughlin recently delivered a full carload of all of the above-mentoned supplies to the Phillips Avenue School; she had obviuosly been shopping for the past few weeks.

"We couldn't believe the boxes and boxes of supplies that the custodians brought into the building," exclaimed Ms. Davis. "As a second step," Ms. Davis continued, "my Girl Scout Jr. Troop #786 will come to the school to sort, organize and make-up 'backpacks' to be distributed to children in need or children that come into the school system in the middle of the year, who have no supplies, or to those children who come to the school from shelters. The need," Ms. Davis concluded, "will be determined by the nurse and/or teachers. We cannot thank the Riverhead Rotary enough for their generous donation!"
