AVENUE SCHOOL'S 5TH ANNUAL
STORY NIGHT
(Fall, 2003) The Phillips Avenue School’s 5th Annual
Story Night is a celebration of reading as the staff, students
and family members put on their favorite pajamas and come
together for a pajama party.
“It’s a fun event to encourage families to read
together before bed,” explains Phillips Avenue’s
Principal Dr. Denise Lowe, “and it’s a great excuse
to buy a new pair of pajamas each year.”
The students travel from story time to snack time in a group
escorted by an older student and to hear stories from teachers,
administrators, board members and community members, who have
volunteered to be readers for the event. This year, the organizers
also offered Spanish translations of the stories.
In addition Officer Lois Smith and McGruff, the Crime Dog,
from the Southampton Police, guard the snacks and hand out
coloring books and other goodies in the cafeteria. Waldbaum’s
donated the refreshments and McDonald’s provided the
juice for the bedtime snack.
Before going home to bed, each child received a Scholastic
children’s book and a certificate to McDonald’s
from PTO members Laurie Roemer (VP), Lisa Moore and Tina Robinson.
Helping to coordinate their efforts was PTO President Barbra
Merker. Jennifer Simoes and Alicia Michna were the co-chairs
for this year's event.
Finally, with a yawn and a book tucked under their arm, the
kids went home to bed.
