“I want students to understand the reason
we celebrate Veterans Day and Memorial Day.”

"The
only thing someone who is a veteran, or currently in the armed
services, wants is for you to say, "Thank you for your
service,'” explained Commander Eugene J. McSherry (V.F.W.
Post 2476 in Riverhead) during a recognition ceremony naming
Pulaski’s Library Media Specialist Rose D’Orsogno
VFW Teacher of the Year.
He and several members of the town council were at Pulaski
to present Ms. D’Orsogno with plaques and town proclamations
thanking her for making the effort to teach her students about
the importance of recognizing the sacrifices of those who
serve.
Ms. D’Orsogno responded by explaining, “I love
history and when I saw a chance to be the one to teach that
portion of the NY State Social Studies Curriculum about holidays,
I grabbed it.”
Members of Ms. D'Orsogno's own family were in the armed service.
Her grandfather, who served with General Patton, disappeared
for two years, and her family discovered later that he had
been secretly working on the Manhattan Project.
“My father jumped out of planes and served in Japan
in the 1950’s,” continued Ms. D’Orsogno,
“and I grew up during the Vietnam War. I know the importance
of thanking these men and women for their service to our country.”
