(December
2007--Riverhead, NY) The Pulaski Street School is busily bringing
to a conclusion their holiday gift giving projects as the holiday break
draws closer and closer. Many students and staff members participate
annually in a huge effort to make sure no child is left behind when
it comes to warmth and safety and holiday cheer.
Some classrooms take on individual projects:
FOOD DRIVE
Stacy
Hubbard's and Kelli McCabe's fifth grade class organized and sponsored
a food drive. Last year, they collected over 2,500 individual donations.
They're still counting, but it looks like they'll come close to that
again this year.
"I'm very proud of the effort our students put into this,"
shares Mrs. Hubbard. "We truck much of what we collect over to
the Long Island Council of Churches, whose offices are nearby,"
she explains. "They make sure the food gets to the families that
need it. This year, our social worker is also going to use some of the
food for distribution to Pulaski families."
GIVING TREE
Students
in Claire Belmonte's and Dee Martin's classes sponsor an annual "Giving
Tree" project. They erect a tree in the entrance to the Pulaski
Street School and students and staff are encouraged to donate a new
scarf, hat, pair of glove, mittens or socks. As they are donated, they
are hung on the tree. The tree will be in the lobby until December 21st.
"Students are donating brand new hats, gloves, mittens and socks
for needy families in our community," states 5th grade teacher
Dee Martin. "The items are distributed to needy students first
and then to shelters, soup kitchens and the like. The Glenwood Lassies
always make beautiful knitted scarves and hats to help us have lots
to give away. The tree is in the lobby of the building and it’s
getting fuller every day! We usually wind up with about three bags full
of things to keep people warm."
