Increasing English Skills One Scene at a Time
Students (in Marisa Medina's ESL classes at the Pulaski Street School and in Monique Sturm's English as a Second Language classes at the Riverhead Middle School) are improving their English speaking skills one scene at a time through a special grant-supported movie-making program that employs the title “Finding their voice through multimedia learning.” >More
Studies Weekly Election
Both the Pulaski Street School and the Phillips Avenue School Moises participated in the “Studies Weekly Election” program, which is a national vote sponsored by Studies Weekly. The voting is done via the Internet. The national results from this election are computed by state and the tally on November 5th was Obama 496,698 / McCain 350,533 (New York Results: Obama 28,662 / McCain 14,243.) >More
Pinwheels for Peace
Riverhead’s Pulaski Street sixth graders joined students from around the United States by planting their “Pinwheels for Peace” in their school’s chain link fence around a large colorful poster that expressed their intent: to awaken the public to their hopes for peace both in their own lives and in the world. >More

Holiday Projects
(December
2007) The Pulaski Street School is busily bringing to a conclusion
their holiday gift giving projects as the holiday break draws closer
and closer. Many students and staff members participate annually
in a huge effort to make sure no child is left behind when it comes
to warmth and safety and holiday cheer. More<

12 EDUCATOR OF THE MONTH"
(October
2007) Mrs. Pat Jordan-Cowley, a 5th grade teacher at the Pulaski
Street School, was recently celebrated as one of 12 Long Island
teachers chosen to be a “News 12 Educator of the Month.”

Clip.) Mrs. Jordan-Cowley was one of approximately 40 teachers
nominated for this distinction. News 12 and Dowling College, who
co-sponsors the award, choose the teachers based on the nomination
of their principal and a set of criteria. One of the panelists and
the Dean of the School of Education at Dowling College, Dr. Clyde
Payne, traveled to the Pulaski Street School to recognize Mrs. Jordan-Cowley
for this achievement and to award her with a tribute and a plaque
during an assembly at Pulaski. More<

Birthday, Mr. DePaola
(September,
2007) Four fifth grade classes at the Pulaski Street School in Riverhead
piggy backed on Tomie DePaola's birthday (Saturday, September 15)
to inspire their Reading / Writing Workshop lesson on letter writing.
The students in Stacy Hubbard and Kelli McCabe's fifth grade class
wrote a letter to Mr. DePaola, who is a famous writer of children's
literature and lives in New York City, inviting him to a birthday
party they were hosting for him on Friday, September 14. More<
Summer
Music Program
(July
2007)
For
the second summer since the reconfiguration of grade levels in the
elementary schools, the fourth graders in the Riverhead School District
were offered an opportunity to take lessons over the summer--before
they enter the fifth grade and begin the normal progression of lessons
from fifth through twelfth grade. More<
