After
School Clubs at Pulaski Street
ART
CLUB:
The
Art Club advisor is Mr. Fallot. Art Club meets on Wednesdays from
3:30 – 4:30. The Art Club meets from October to May. Students
will learn techniques for the display of art work. Their work
will be displayed in various community-based art shows. These
will include: The Riverhead Library, Art
in Action, the Parrish Art Museum's show in Southampton, the
Tishman-Speyer (Chrysler Building, NYC) Children's
Holiday Art Show and also on display in the District Office.
BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB:
The
Book of the Month is a "student run" club under the
supervision of Mrs. Baumann and Mr. Barona. Participants get together
at the monthly meeting and participate in an in-depth discussion
about the novel read. Club members vote on future selections,
which are distributed at each meeting. There is no cost for the
books and membership remains open throughout the year.
CHESS CLUB:
Chess
Club is off to a great start this year. We have a wide range of
skills in the club, including some students that are just learning
how to play right now. So far we're practicing our skills and
sportsmanship and looking forward to some "in-club"
tournaments. There's even talk about using timers sometimes to
speed the games up! With close to forty members, Chess Club could
hold bragging rights as the most popular club!
MATH
OLYMPIADS:
Math
Olympiads advisor is Mrs. Johnson. Math Olympiads meet on Wednesday
from 3:30 – 4:30 through March. Math Olympiads practice
challenging math word problems and have competitions once a month.
The high-scorer will receive a trophy at club’s end.
JOURNALISM
CLUB:
Journalism Club has begun with much enthusiasm this year! All
25 journalists are working hard to complete the monthly newsletter.
This year the Pulaski Press will be published for all students!
The newsletter will include articles about Pulaski Street School,
school and community sports, community events, poems and short
stories. The club advisor is Mrs. Hubbard and they meet on Wednesdays
from 3:30 to 4:30 PM.
TECHNOLOGY TEAM:
The
Technology Team advisor is Mrs. Gorman. Technology Team meets
on Mondays from 3:30 – 4:30. Mrs. Gorman reports that students
have gotten off to a good start but that there is still lots of
work to be done. Students are learning about web design and animation
with Macromedia Flash. We also create web pages on staff and students.
We will need:
Student work – including poetry, short stories, art work
WE NEED DONATIONS – used ink cartridges (laser or desk jet)
& old cell phones for our recycling program. Don’t throw
it out; give US a SHOUT!
NATURE CLUB:
Pulaski
Street School’s Nature Club took it’s last outing
of the year by hiking through the Cranberry Bog County Park. This
nature preserve is also home to New York’s largest remaining
coastal plain Atlantic white cedar swamp. This was just one of
five outings that included an exploration of sea animals at the
Peconic Bay Beach; a beach cleanup at Reeves Beach on Long Island
Sound, an afternoon of bird watching at Indian Island County Park,
and a hike through a forest that has grown on the sediment that
was deposited during the ice ages at Penny Pond. The Nature Club
is sponsored by RCSD and Cornell Cooperative Extension. The Nature
Club, which is for 20 very committed 5th graders, met after school
from 3:30-5:00 PM for five weeks. The students involved love it!
